In 2016, Chennai Food Bank, now known as RYA Metro Foodbank, continued its mission of holistic community welfare by creating a day filled with discovery, joy, and artistic expression for God’s Own Children.
As part of this special initiative, 5,000 children were taken on an educational and recreational visit to Vandalur Zoo. For many of the children, this outing offered a rare chance to experience nature, observe wildlife up close, and enjoy the excitement of exploration outside their everyday environment. The visit encouraged curiosity, learning, and shared moments of wonder among peers.
The day’s experience extended beyond the zoo visit. Following the outing, the children gathered at the SRM University auditorium for a special light music programme. The event created a warm and celebratory atmosphere, where music brought smiles, energy, and emotional connection. Songs and performances offered a sense of relaxation and joy, allowing the children to unwind and fully enjoy the occasion.
The purpose of this initiative was to nurture emotional well-being and confidence alongside care and support. While hunger relief remains central to the organisation’s work, the event recognised that meaningful experiences, cultural exposure, and moments of happiness play an important role in a child’s development—especially for those growing up without stable family environments.
Community involvement was key to the success of this large-scale effort. Organising transport, safety, coordination, and programming for 5,000 children required collective planning and shared responsibility. Volunteers and supporters worked together to ensure that the entire day unfolded smoothly, with every child feeling safe, welcomed, and valued.
The impact of the initiative was deeply felt. For the children, it created lasting memories of joy, learning, and togetherness. For the organisation, it reaffirmed the belief that community welfare is most powerful when it touches hearts as well as lives. The combination of education, entertainment, and care reflected a compassionate approach to service.
Apna Bana Lo 2016 stands as a meaningful chapter in Chennai Food Bank’s journey—highlighting its commitment to creating inclusive experiences that restore dignity, inspire happiness, and strengthen a sense of belonging among children.
Together, we continue our journey towards a hunger-free and compassionate community.
