A Pongal of Plenty: Sharing the Harvest with Irukkam Village

Pongal is a festival rooted in gratitude—celebrating harvest, sustenance, and the bond between communities and the land. In January 2024, Chennai Food Bank, now known as RYA Metro Foodbank, marked this important occasion by standing with families who often face the festival with uncertainty rather than abundance.

As part of its Pongal charitable initiative, the Foodbank distributed 1000 kilograms of boiled rice to underprivileged families in Irukkam Village, located in the Thiruvallur District. The initiative was designed to ensure that families could celebrate the harvest festival with dignity, nourishment, and a sense of inclusion.

For many households in rural communities, access to essential food grains during festive seasons can be challenging. By providing boiled rice—a staple in everyday meals—the initiative directly supported food security while respecting local food habits and cultural traditions. The distribution helped families prepare festive meals without the added worry of affordability or scarcity.

Community members came together during the distribution, creating an atmosphere of warmth and shared purpose. Volunteers ensured that the process was conducted smoothly and respectfully, with care taken to reach those who needed support the most. Every interaction reflected the Foodbank’s belief that hunger relief is not just about quantity, but about compassion and dignity.

This Pongal initiative was a reminder that festivals become truly meaningful when they are inclusive. The simple act of sharing food strengthened community bonds and reaffirmed the importance of collective responsibility in addressing hunger and inequality.

Through consistent grassroots efforts like this, RYA Metro Foodbank continues its long-standing commitment to community welfare and hunger relief—especially during moments that hold deep cultural and emotional significance. By aligning its mission with local traditions, the organisation ensures that support reaches people in ways that feel respectful, relevant, and heartfelt.

Together, we continue our journey towards a hunger-free world.

Project KREEDA: A Day of Play, Care, and Nourishment for Special Children

In January 2024, Chennai Food Bank, now known as RYA Metro Foodbank, extended its commitment to community welfare through Project KREEDA – Sports for Special Children, an initiative focused on inclusion, joy, and care.

Project KREEDA was designed to create a safe and encouraging environment where children with special needs could experience the joy of play, movement, and togetherness. Hosted at Vandaloor Zoo, the event brought together children, caregivers, volunteers, and organisers for a day that celebrated abilities rather than limitations.

Understanding that meaningful participation begins with nourishment, Chennai Food Bank supported the event by providing 450 breakfast meals and 450 lunch meals. These meals ensured that every child and caregiver attending the event could participate fully, comfortably, and with energy throughout the day.

The initiative reflected the belief that food is more than sustenance—it is care, reassurance, and dignity. By ensuring timely and nutritious meals, the Foodbank helped remove one of the most basic barriers to participation, allowing children to focus on enjoyment, engagement, and shared experiences.

Volunteers played a vital role in the smooth execution of the initiative, ensuring that meals were distributed with sensitivity and respect. The atmosphere throughout the day was one of warmth and encouragement, reinforcing the importance of inclusive community spaces where every child feels valued and supported.

Project KREEDA stood as a reminder that community welfare extends beyond hunger relief alone. It is also about enabling moments of happiness, confidence, and connection—especially for children who benefit greatly from inclusive and supportive environments.

Through its involvement in Project KREEDA, RYA Metro Foodbank reaffirmed its mission to support holistic well-being, recognising that nutrition, dignity, and inclusion go hand in hand. Initiatives like these reflect the organisation’s belief that compassion, when expressed through thoughtful action, can create lasting impact.

Nourishing Minds and Bodies: Highway to Happiness Brings People Together

In May 2023, Chennai Food Bank, now known as RYA Metro Foodbank, supported a meaningful community gathering that focused on inner well-being, reflection, and collective positivity. The event, titled Highway to Happiness, brought together individuals seeking inspiration and clarity during a time when emotional well-being is as vital as physical nourishment.

The programme featured an inspiring talk by Sister BK Shivani, whose words encouraged self-awareness, resilience, and mindful living. Held at Chinmaya Heritage Hall, the event welcomed a diverse audience, creating a shared space for learning, introspection, and connection.

As part of its contribution, Chennai Food Bank provided breakfast and lunch for 1,000 attendees. The purpose of this support was to ensure that participants could fully engage with the programme without concern for basic needs. By taking care of nourishment, the organisation helped create an environment where people could focus on reflection, dialogue, and personal growth.

This initiative reflected a broader understanding of community welfare—one that recognises the importance of nourishing both body and mind. Providing meals at such gatherings supports inclusivity, allowing individuals from different backgrounds to participate comfortably and with dignity. It also reinforces the idea that food, when shared thoughtfully, strengthens community bonds.

Community involvement played an important role in the smooth execution of the event. Volunteers and organisers worked together to coordinate meal service efficiently, ensuring that food was distributed in an orderly and respectful manner. Their collaboration demonstrated how partnerships can enhance the impact of charitable initiatives, even beyond traditional hunger relief settings.

The positive outcomes of the Highway to Happiness event were felt throughout the day. Attendees benefited from an uplifting message, meaningful conversations, and the comfort of shared meals. For many, the experience offered renewed perspective and a sense of calm—supported by the simple assurance that their basic needs were cared for.

Thirty Years of Service, Millions of Lives Touched: A Milestone of Compassion and Commitment

In 2023, RYA Metro Foodbank celebrated a landmark moment—30 years of unwavering service in the journey to fight hunger and uplift communities. What began as a humble effort has, over three decades, grown into a movement of compassion, impacting millions of lives across Tamil Nadu and beyond.

To mark this milestone, Chennai Food Bank undertook a large-scale charitable initiative that reflected both gratitude and responsibility. As part of the 30-year celebration, 8,000 kg of food grains were distributed to 30 beneficiary institutions, ensuring sustained nourishment for children, elders, and vulnerable individuals who depend on daily food support.

This occasion also marked an extraordinary achievement in the organisation’s history—surpassing the milestone of over 4 crore meals served since inception. Each meal represents care, dignity, and the belief that no one should go to bed hungry. The celebration was not about looking back alone, but about reaffirming a mission that remains as relevant today as it was three decades ago.

Extending the impact beyond institutions, the initiative also reached families at the community level. In partnership with the Rotary Club of Chennai Kilpauk, grocery kits were distributed to 400 underprivileged families in Irukkam Village. These kits provided essential supplies, offering food security and relief to households navigating daily economic challenges.

The purpose of this milestone initiative was twofold—to celebrate a legacy of service and to strengthen the commitment to community welfare. By combining institutional support with direct family-level outreach, the effort reflected a holistic approach to hunger relief—addressing both immediate and sustained needs.

Community involvement has always been the backbone of Chennai Food Bank’s journey. Partnerships, volunteers, and well-wishers have collectively shaped its impact over the years. The 30-year celebration was a testament to what can be achieved when compassion is sustained by collaboration and trust.

The positive outcomes of this initiative were deeply meaningful. Institutions received vital food support, families experienced relief and reassurance, and the larger community witnessed the power of consistent, mission-driven action.

As Chennai Food Bank steps into its next chapter, the 30-year milestone stands not as a finish line, but as a foundation—one built on empathy, resilience, and hope.

Together, we continue our journey towards a hunger-free world.

Sustaining Hope Every Day: A Year of Consistent Care and Nourishment

Hunger relief is not always about one-day events or emergency responses. Often, its greatest impact lies in consistency—showing up every month, every year, with quiet reliability. During 2022–2023, Chennai Food Bank, now known as RYA Metro Foodbank, strengthened its long-term commitment to community welfare through sustained food support for institutions caring for vulnerable populations.

Throughout this period, the Foodbank distributed 8,000 kilograms of rice every month to 27 needy and deserving institutions. These institutions, home to children, elders, and individuals requiring daily care, depend heavily on consistent access to clean and nutritious food. By ensuring a regular supply of staple grains, the initiative helped safeguard everyday meals and reduce uncertainty around food availability.

This monthly distribution played a crucial role in maintaining stability for institutional kitchens, allowing caregivers to focus on health, education, and well-being rather than worrying about food shortages. For inmates and residents, it meant access to wholesome meals prepared with dignity—an essential foundation for physical and emotional well-being.

Beyond everyday nourishment, Chennai Food Bank also ensured that moments of celebration were not forgotten. As part of its Diwali outreach, special rice distributions and thoughtfully prepared gift hampers were provided to students at Ramakrishna Mission Students Home. The initiative aimed to bring festive warmth and inclusion to children living away from their families during an important cultural occasion.

Festivals hold deep emotional value, especially for young minds. Through this Diwali initiative, the Foodbank helped create a sense of belonging and joy, reminding students that they were cared for and remembered. The gesture went beyond material support, reinforcing emotional connection and shared celebration.

Together, these efforts reflected a holistic approach to hunger relief—addressing both daily nutritional needs and the emotional importance of festive moments. Volunteers, partner institutions, and supporters all played a role in ensuring the smooth and respectful delivery of aid, strengthening trust within the communities served.

Through sustained monthly distributions and thoughtful festive initiatives, RYA Metro Foodbank reaffirmed its mission-first approach—working quietly but consistently to ensure that no one is left behind when it comes to food, dignity, and care.

Together, we continue our journey towards a hunger-free world.

Trupti Scheme: Nourishing Caregivers with Dignity and Compassion

In October 2023, as Chennai Food Bank marked 31 years of service to the community, it chose to celebrate the milestone not with ceremony, but with compassion. This spirit gave rise to the Trupti Scheme, a heartfelt initiative aimed at supporting those who often go unnoticed—the attendants of patients undergoing treatment at Stanley Hospital.

For families standing by their loved ones in hospitals, daily meals can become an unexpected burden—emotionally and financially. Recognising this silent struggle, RYA Metro Foodbank, formerly Chennai Food Bank, launched the Trupti Scheme to ensure that caregivers are nourished with dignity while they focus on what matters most: being present for their patients.

The initiative began on 19th October 2023, providing 500 freshly prepared meals every day to patients’ attendants at Stanley Hospital. Each meal served was not just food, but reassurance—an expression of solidarity during a time of uncertainty and stress.

The launch of the Trupti Scheme was marked by the presence of honourable dignitaries, including the Health Minister Mr. M.A. Subramani and the Dean of Stanley Hospital, Mr. Balaji, whose support reinforced the importance of community-led welfare initiatives within public healthcare spaces.

Volunteers and team members worked tirelessly to ensure smooth and respectful distribution, maintaining hygiene, quality, and empathy at every step. The initiative reflected Chennai Food Bank’s long-standing belief that hunger relief is not only about feeding the hungry, but about restoring dignity and hope.

By reaching hundreds of individuals daily, the Trupti Scheme created immediate, tangible impact—relieving stress, reducing expenses, and offering comfort to families already carrying heavy emotional loads. It stands as a powerful reminder that even small acts, when done consistently and compassionately, can transform lives.

As RYA Metro Foodbank continues its mission of community welfare and hunger relief, initiatives like the Trupti Scheme reaffirm its commitment to standing beside those in need—quietly, respectfully, and with purpose.

Together, we continue our journey towards a hunger-free world.

As part of its contribution, Chennai Food Bank provided 750 breakfast and lunch meals for the children, volunteers, and organisers participating in the event. The purpose of this support was to ensure that hunger did not interrupt a day meant for creativity, confidence, and joy. Nutritious meals allowed participants to remain energised and fully engaged throughout the programme.

This initiative reflected a broader commitment to community welfare—one that recognises food as an enabler of participation and dignity. For children with special needs, thoughtfully planned events and reliable nourishment help create positive experiences that build self-esteem and a sense of belonging.

Community involvement was central to the success of the Punnagai event. Organisers, volunteers, caregivers, and partners worked together to ensure that the day unfolded smoothly and respectfully. A New Space for a Stronger Mission: Building the Foundation for Greater Impact

In February 2022, Chennai Food Bank, now known as RYA Metro Foodbank, marked an important milestone with the renovation and inauguration of its office space. While much of the organisation’s work happens on the ground—serving meals, reaching communities, and responding to emergencies—this moment focused on strengthening the backbone that supports every act of service.

The purpose of the office renovation was rooted in long-term vision and responsibility. As the scale and scope of Chennai Food Bank’s activities continued to grow, the need for a more functional, organised, and efficient workspace became essential. The renovated office was designed to better support planning, coordination, volunteer engagement, and day-to-day operations that enable timely hunger relief and community welfare initiatives.

This transformation was not just about infrastructure; it was about creating a space that reflects the organisation’s values of dignity, care, and preparedness. A well-equipped and welcoming office allows teams to work more effectively, respond faster during crises, and collaborate seamlessly with partners, volunteers, and supporters.

Community involvement played a meaningful role in this milestone. The renovation and inauguration symbolised shared belief and collective trust in the mission of Chennai Food Bank. Supporters and well-wishers stood behind the idea that investing in systems and spaces is essential to sustaining impact and accountability in charitable work.

The positive outcomes of this initiative are ongoing and far-reaching. With improved facilities, the organisation is better positioned to manage large-scale relief operations, coordinate logistics, and serve as a dependable hub for hunger relief activities. The office now stands as a place where ideas turn into action and compassion is translated into structured, effective service.

More importantly, the renovated space reinforces continuity and resilience. It ensures that even as challenges evolve—be it disasters, public health crises, or everyday hunger—the organisation remains prepared, organised, and committed to its mission.

The February 2022 office renovation and inauguration represent a quiet but powerful step forward in Chennai Food Bank’s journey. It reflects a belief that strong foundations enable lasting impact, and that caring for the mission also means caring for the systems that sustain it.

Together, we continue our journey towards a hunger-free world.
