Extending Compassion Beyond Borders: Standing With Nepal in a Time of Loss
On April 25, 2015, a powerful earthquake struck Nepal, leaving behind widespread devastation, loss of life, and thousands of families struggling to survive amid collapsed homes and disrupted livelihoods. In the aftermath of the disaster, access to basic necessities—especially food—became an urgent and pressing need.
In response to this humanitarian crisis, Chennai Food Bank, now known as RYA Metro Foodbank, stepped forward with compassion and resolve. Food grains were provided to support 500 families affected by the earthquake, helping them meet one of their most immediate needs during a period of extreme uncertainty.
The purpose of this relief effort was rooted in empathy and responsibility. When natural disasters strike, hunger often follows closely behind, compounding the suffering of families who have already lost homes, security, and loved ones. By extending food support, the organisation aimed to offer stability and reassurance during the critical days following the earthquake.
Though separated by national borders, the response reflected a deep belief that humanity knows no boundaries. The initiative underscored Chennai Food Bank’s long-standing commitment to hunger relief and community welfare—where help is extended wherever it is needed most, without distinction.
Community involvement played a meaningful role in enabling this outreach. Behind the effort was collective goodwill and shared concern for families facing unimaginable hardship. The mobilisation of food grains ensured that relief reached households who were struggling to rebuild daily life amid damaged infrastructure and limited access to supplies.
The impact of this initiative was both immediate and tangible. For the 500 families supported, access to food meant one less burden to carry during a time of overwhelming loss. It allowed them to focus on safety, recovery, and caring for one another, knowing that they were not facing the crisis alone.
The 2015 Nepal earthquake relief stands as a testament to Chennai Food Bank’s mission-first approach—where compassion is translated into timely action. It remains a reminder that even in the face of distant tragedies, acts of kindness can travel far and restore hope.
Together, we continue our journey towards a hunger-free and compassionate community.
