Through Rising Waters, We Reached Out: Chennai Food Bank During the 2015 Floods
On 30 November 2015, relentless rains brought Chennai to a standstill. Severe flooding submerged homes, roads, and entire neighbourhoods, leaving lakhs of residents stranded without electricity, clean water, or access to food. As daily life came to a halt, hunger quickly emerged as one of the most urgent challenges faced by affected families.
In this moment of crisis, Chennai Food Bank, now known as RYA Metro Foodbank, mobilised one of its largest emergency hunger-relief efforts. A total of 5,00,000 food packets were prepared and distributed across multiple flood-affected areas in the city, ensuring that people trapped in their homes or relief shelters received timely meals.
The purpose of this initiative was immediate and life-sustaining—to ensure that no family went hungry while waiting for floodwaters to recede. With roads submerged and conventional access cut off, reaching people required courage, adaptability, and deep commitment. Volunteers stepped up without hesitation, navigating flooded streets and entering severely affected localities to deliver food where it was needed most.
One of the most striking aspects of this relief effort was the determination of Chennai Food Bank volunteers, who reached stranded residents using boats when vehicles could no longer pass. These efforts ensured that food reached vulnerable families, including the elderly, children, and those unable to evacuate in time. Each food packet delivered carried not just nourishment, but reassurance that help had arrived.
Community welfare was at the heart of the response. The scale of the operation reflected collective compassion and coordinated action, driven by the belief that hunger relief cannot wait—even under the harshest conditions. The effort brought together volunteers who worked tirelessly, often in challenging and unsafe environments, to uphold dignity and care during a city-wide emergency.
The impact of this initiative was both vast and immediate. For hundreds of thousands of residents, a simple meal provided strength, comfort, and hope during days of uncertainty. It allowed families to endure the crisis with one less worry and reinforced the power of community-led action in times of disaster.
The 2015 Chennai floods remain a defining chapter in the journey of Chennai Food Bank—one that demonstrated resilience, humanity, and the unwavering resolve to serve, even when the waters were rising.
Together, we continue our journey towards a hunger-free and compassionate community.
