Apna Bana Lo
In 2017, Chennai Food Bank, now known as RYA Metro Foodbank, continued its Apna Bana Lo journey with an initiative that blended excitement, exploration, and heartfelt inclusion for God’s Own Children.
As part of this special programme, 1,500 children were taken for a joyful carnival experience followed by a memorable Chennai Metro Rail journey from Kilpauk to Chennai International Airport. For many of the children, this was their first experience travelling by Metro—an everyday convenience for some, but a moment of wonder and pride for others.
The purpose of the event was to create joyful exposure and a sense of belonging. Beyond entertainment, the initiative aimed to introduce children to the city’s modern public transport system, helping them feel confident, curious, and connected to the world around them. The Metro ride itself became a symbol of access and inclusion—showing children that these shared spaces belong to them too.
The carnival added colour and celebration to the day. Laughter, play, and shared excitement created an atmosphere where children could relax, enjoy, and simply be themselves. These moments of happiness are especially meaningful for children growing up without consistent family support, offering emotional nourishment alongside care.
Community involvement played an important role in making the event possible. Coordinating the movement, safety, and comfort of 1,500 children required thoughtful planning and collective effort. Volunteers and supporters ensured that the journey was smooth, secure, and filled with warmth at every step.
The impact of Apna Bana Lo 2017 went far beyond a single outing. For the children, the experience built confidence, created lasting memories, and reinforced a sense of inclusion in everyday life. For the organisation, it reaffirmed a core belief—that community welfare includes access, exposure, and moments that inspire joy and self-worth.
