In 2023, RYA Metro Foodbank celebrated a landmark moment—30 years of unwavering service in the journey to fight hunger and uplift communities. What began as a humble effort has, over three decades, grown into a movement of compassion, impacting millions of lives across Tamil Nadu and beyond.

To mark this milestone, Chennai Food Bank undertook a large-scale charitable initiative that reflected both gratitude and responsibility. As part of the 30-year celebration, 8,000 kg of food grains were distributed to 30 beneficiary institutions, ensuring sustained nourishment for children, elders, and vulnerable individuals who depend on daily food support.

This occasion also marked an extraordinary achievement in the organisation’s history—surpassing the milestone of over 4 crore meals served since inception. Each meal represents care, dignity, and the belief that no one should go to bed hungry. The celebration was not about looking back alone, but about reaffirming a mission that remains as relevant today as it was three decades ago.

Extending the impact beyond institutions, the initiative also reached families at the community level. In partnership with the Rotary Club of Chennai Kilpauk, grocery kits were distributed to 400 underprivileged families in Irukkam Village. These kits provided essential supplies, offering food security and relief to households navigating daily economic challenges.

A Sacred Journey of Care and Inclusion: Apna Bana Lo Takes Children to Tirupati

In 2023, Chennai Food Bank, now known as RYA Metro Foodbank, continued the legacy of its Apna Bana Lo initiative by creating a deeply meaningful and inclusive spiritual journey for children who rarely get such opportunities.

As part of this initiative, 1,008 children from orphanages and homes for the mentally challenged were accompanied by dedicated members on a divine pilgrimage to Tirupati. The journey was organised through a special chartered train, ensuring safety, comfort, and dignity for every child throughout the experience.

The purpose of Apna Bana Lo 2023 was to offer emotional and spiritual enrichment to children who often live on the margins of society. While hunger relief remains central to the organisation’s mission, this initiative recognised that faith, hope, and meaningful experiences play an equally important role in nurturing confidence, inner peace, and a sense of belonging.

The journey itself became a powerful symbol of inclusion. Travelling together fostered excitement, connection, and shared joy among the children and their caregivers. For many participants, this was their first visit to Tirupati and their first experience of a long-distance train journey, making the occasion both memorable and transformative.

During 2022–2023, Chennai Food Bank, now known as RYA Metro Foodbank, strengthened its long-term commitment to community welfare through sustained food support for institutions caring for vulnerable populations.

Throughout this period, the Foodbank distributed 8,000 kilograms of rice every month to 27 needy and deserving institutions. These institutions, home to children, elders, and individuals requiring daily care, depend heavily on consistent access to clean and nutritious food. By ensuring a regular supply of staple grains, the initiative helped safeguard everyday meals and reduce uncertainty around food availability.

This monthly distribution played a crucial role in maintaining stability for institutional kitchens, allowing caregivers to focus on health, education, and well-being rather than worrying about food shortages. For inmates and residents, it meant access to wholesome meals prepared with dignity—an essential foundation for physical and emotional well-being.

As part of its Diwali outreach, special rice distributions and thoughtfully prepared gift hampers were provided to students at Ramakrishna Mission Students Home. Sharing the Light of Diwali with Those Who Need It Most

Diwali is a time of togetherness, warmth, and shared joy. In November 2023, RYA Metro Foodbank, formerly known as Chennai Food Bank, marked the festive season with a heartfelt charitable initiative aimed at spreading happiness among those who often experience festivals without celebration.

The Diwali special distribution was designed to bring both nourishment and comfort to underprivileged individuals and families. Through this initiative, the Foodbank distributed 200 sweet boxes, 200 grocery kits, blankets, and 1000 kg of millets, reaching over 200 individuals across multiple locations in Chennai. Each item was thoughtfully chosen to meet immediate needs while also adding a sense of festive dignity.

One of the key distribution drives took place at the Tamil Nadu Golf Federation in Nandanam, where families received grocery essentials, nutritious millets, and festive sweets. For many, these supplies meant not just food on the table, but the reassurance that they were remembered during a season of giving.

Extending the spirit of Diwali further, Chennai Food Bank also distributed 2000 sweet boxes to attendants of patients at Omandurar Government Multi Super Specialty Hospital, Stanley Hospital, and KMC Hospital. These attendants, often spending long hours away from home while caring for loved ones, received a simple yet meaningful reminder that compassion exists even in difficult moments.

The hospital distribution was graced by AJ Sekhar Reddy, President of the Local Advisory Committee of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam, whose presence reinforced the importance of collective responsibility and community-driven welfare.

Trupti Scheme: Nourishing Caregivers with Dignity and Compassion

In October 2023, as Chennai Food Bank marked 31 years of service to the community, it chose to celebrate the milestone not with ceremony, but with compassion. This spirit gave rise to the Trupti Scheme, a heartfelt initiative aimed at supporting those who often go unnoticed—the attendants of patients undergoing treatment at Stanley Hospital.

For families standing by their loved ones in hospitals, daily meals can become an unexpected burden—emotionally and financially. Recognising this silent struggle, RYA Metro Foodbank, formerly Chennai Food Bank, launched the Trupti Scheme to ensure that caregivers are nourished with dignity while they focus on what matters most: being present for their patients.

The initiative began on 19th October 2023, providing 500 freshly prepared meals every day to patients’ attendants at Stanley Hospital. Each meal served was not just food, but reassurance—an expression of solidarity during a time of uncertainty and stress.

The launch of the Trupti Scheme was marked by the presence of honourable dignitaries, including the Health Minister Mr. M.A. Subramani and the Dean of Stanley Hospital, Mr. Balaji, whose support reinforced the importance of community-led welfare initiatives within public healthcare spaces.

Volunteers and team members worked tirelessly to ensure smooth and respectful distribution, maintaining hygiene, quality, and empathy at every step. The initiative reflected Chennai Food Bank’s long-standing belief that hunger relief is not only about feeding the hungry, but about restoring dignity and hope.

As part of this relief initiative, 164 grocery kits were distributed to affected families in Manipur, each kit containing a one-month supply of food and essential items.

As part of this initiative, 3,000 children from 30 needy institutions were brought together for an exclusive screening of the superhit movie Beast at Sathyam Cinemas PVR. For many of the children, this was a rare opportunity to enjoy a complete multiplex experience—big screens, surround sound, and the shared thrill of watching a popular film with friends.

The purpose of Metro Talkies went far beyond entertainment. The initiative was designed to offer children a full day of joy, inclusion, and emotional nourishment. From organised pick-up and safe transport to snacks, refreshments, lunch, and even caps, every detail was thoughtfully planned to ensure that the children felt cared for and celebrated throughout the day.

In response to this crisis, Chennai Food Bank, now known as RYA Metro Foodbank, activated its emergency hunger-relief efforts to support those affected by the floods. With urgency and care, a total of 60,000 freshly cooked meals were prepared in the central kitchen to ensure timely nourishment for families impacted by the disaster.
