Chennai Rains

60k Meals Served To The Needy During Chennai Rains 2021

The incessant rains had caused havoc in major parts of Chennai resulting in most of the low lying areas becoming inaccessible. While reaching such places was nearly impossible, it was a bigger challenge for the inhabitants of those areas to get access to quality food and clean drinking water.

As the rains uncompromisingly battered Chennai, leaving thousands of people without access to food and water, RYA Madras Metro Trust through it’s flagship program Chennai Food Bank set up a mega central kitchen in T. Nagar, Chennai and prepared freshly cooked meals for the needy.

We raised funds from various donors from India & overseas through effective social media campaigns and sourced quality grains for the cooked meals. We prepared meals for over a week and distributed the same to over 60,000 needy people across the city.

While we focused on managing the kitchen and reaching to various parts of Chennai, we reached out to the NGO’s who wanted to lend a helping hand in reaching to more needy people in interior areas which were inaccessible by road.

Volunteers, NGO’s, members went out of their way and reached out far and wide on cars, vans, tricycles, boats, cycles to ensure the needy in the worst affected areas get access to 2 meals.

Flag Off by Ms. Kanimozhi, Member of Parliament

We were honoured to have Honourable Member of Parliament Ms.Kanimozhi who flagged off the vans with cooked food for distribution across the city. Food packets were distributed to the corporation staff who were working tirelessly to ensure the city gets back to normal at the earliest.

Central Kitchen Setup

A central kitchen was setup overnight where chefs from across the city were called on to prepare cooked food for the needy. Grains were sourced in a short time and were used to prepare over 60,000 meals. The kitchen functioned for over 12 hours everyday in order to cater to the various NGO’s who were helping us reach the food to the needy in the worst affected areas.

A non-stop 7 day activity involving over 20 NGO’s, hundreds of volunteers and 60,000 meals for the needy ensured people had access to food in spite of power cuts, flooded roads and localities and non availability of essentials in the surroundings. Chennai Food Bank partnered with Jain Annapurna Trust to make this a large scale distribution drive.
